The movement

How to do a dumbbell biceps curl

Use a steady range and keep each rep controlled from start to finish.

  1. 01

    Stand steadily

Hold the dumbbells by your sides with a comfortable palm position. Keep your knees soft and your torso quiet.

  2. 02

    Curl through the elbows

Bend the elbows to bring the weights upward. Keep your upper arms near your sides rather than leaning back to start the rep.

  3. 03

    Finish without lifting the shoulders

Reach a controlled top position without forcing the wrist or swinging the elbow forward. Keep the grip secure.

  4. 04

    Lower and repeat

Return through a comfortable arm extension. If alternating arms, keep the rhythm steady and count reps consistently for each side.

Good to know

Dumbbell Biceps Curl questions.

Should I alternate arms or curl both together?

Either can work. Keep the version and counting convention consistent; alternating curls and simultaneous curls can feel different even with the same dumbbells.

How do hammer curls differ from biceps curls?

Hammer curls keep the palms facing inward. A conventional supinated curl turns the palms upward; the different grip changes how the elbow flexors share the work.

Should my elbows move forward?

Small natural movement is different from swinging the whole upper arm to lift a heavy load. Keep the upper arms reasonably steady for a repeatable curl.

How should I log alternating curls?

Record reps per arm and note that convention. A total of 20 alternating repetitions can mean 10 per side, not 20 for each arm.

How to progress your dumbbell biceps curl

Choose a rep range suited to your routine and a load you can control. Build repeatable reps before considering the smallest practical load increase. Compare the same variation, range, and effort across sessions rather than forcing a heavier weight every workout.
