The movement

How to do a lat pulldown

Use a steady range and keep each rep controlled from start to finish.

  1. 01

    Adjust the machine

Set the seat and thigh pad so you stay supported. Choose a manageable load and a handle or grip that feels comfortable.

  2. 02

    Begin with a controlled reach

Take the handles overhead and keep your torso steady. Start with the arms extended through a comfortable shoulder range.

  3. 03

    Pull the elbows down

Pull toward your upper chest or along the machine's handle path. Avoid jerking the weight or leaning far back to finish.

  4. 04

    Return gradually

Allow your arms to reach overhead under control. Keep your seat position steady and avoid letting the resistance pull you upward.

Good to know

Lat Pulldown questions.

Should I pull the bar behind my neck?

A front pulldown toward the upper chest is a practical default. Choose a comfortable grip and controlled shoulder position rather than forcing a behind-the-neck range.

Is a wider pulldown grip always better?

No. Use a grip that permits a controlled range without discomfort. Wider is not automatically more effective, and changing grip can change the load you can use.

How is a pulldown different from a pull-up?

In a pulldown you move an external resistance while seated. In a pull-up you move your body toward a fixed bar. Both train a vertical pulling pattern, but their loads are not directly interchangeable.

Can I compare weights on different pulldown machines?

Not directly. Pulley ratios, lever arms, and stack labels differ. Keep the machine and attachment consistent or add a note when they change.

How to progress your lat pulldown

Choose a rep range suited to your routine and a load you can control. Build repeatable reps before considering the smallest practical load increase. Compare the same variation, range, and effort across sessions rather than forcing a heavier weight every workout.
