The movement

How to do a cable triceps pushdown

Use a steady range and keep each rep controlled from start to finish.

  1. 01

    Set a high pulley

Attach a rope or bar securely to the high cable. Select a manageable load and take a stable stance facing the machine.

  2. 02

    Keep the upper arms steady

Bring the elbows near your sides and start with them bent. Take tension on the cable without hunching over the stack.

  3. 03

    Extend the elbows

Press the attachment down until your arms straighten comfortably. Keep your wrists steady and avoid using bodyweight to force the handle downward.

  4. 04

    Return under tension

Allow the elbows to bend while the upper arms remain fairly still. Repeat without letting the plates slam together.

Good to know

Cable Triceps Pushdown questions.

Is a rope or a bar better for triceps pushdowns?

Both are useful options. A rope allows more freedom at the hands; a fixed bar constrains the grip. Choose a comfortable attachment and compare progress using the same version.

Should I move my elbows during a pushdown?

Keep the upper arms fairly still so elbow extension performs most of the movement. Avoid turning the rep into a large shoulder swing or a bodyweight press.

What muscles does a pushdown work?

The triceps are the main target because they straighten the elbows. The forearms help maintain the grip and wrist position.

Why do cable-stack numbers differ between gyms?

Pulley ratios and machine designs vary. A stack label does not make two machines equivalent; log the machine or attachment when changing equipment.

How to progress your cable triceps pushdown

Choose a rep range suited to your routine and a load you can control. Build repeatable reps before considering the smallest practical load increase. Compare the same variation, range, and effort across sessions rather than forcing a heavier weight every workout.
